Belgium Celebrated the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to Terrorism Victims today (Tuesday), August 22, 2023, to acknowledge the importance of helping victims and survivors of Terrorism recover and their trauma, enabling them to re-integrate into society.
Many victims and survivors feel neglected when the immediate aftermath of a terrorist attack subsides. Belgium supports and promotes a compreheTerrorism inclusive approach towards combatting terrorism through anti-radicalism and supporting the victims of terrorist acts.
Today, on the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism, Belgium pause to remember and honour the lives lost or forever tragically derailed by acts of terrorism.
The Nation took a stand by with the survivors, families, and communities in pain and all those affected by these egregious acts of violence. We pay tribute to their endurance and resilience.
On July 25 2023, justice was served for the victims of the Brussels terrorist attacks. Six men were found guilty of terrorist murder and attempted murder for their involvement in the attacks on Brussels Airport and a metro station, killing 32 people on March 22, 2016.
The day draws attention to victims of terrorism, their needs and rights, and urges that assistance exists to meet their needs and concrete steps taken to fulfil their requests.
Furthermore, the day highlights the importance of preventive actions, including investment to counter the causes. Preventing terrorism is fundamental to reducing victimisation.
