The United States announced the additional funding of nearly $172 million to Sudan Today on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, as humanitarian assistance to help people in Sudan and neighbouring countries experiencing the impacts of the humanitarian crises for the past two months through the UNSAID, US Agency for International Development and the US Department of State.
As per the reports shared by the sources, Since the conflict erupted in Sudan more than two months ago, fighting has killed hundreds of people, injured thousands more, and displaced more than 1.4 million people within Sudan and nearly 500,000 to neighbouring countries.
The US funding, through USAID – US Agency for International Development and the US Department of State, brings the total US humanitarian assistance to support the Sudan response to more than $550 million to date in Fiscal Year 2023.
With this additional humanitarian assistance, the US government’s humanitarian partners are scaling up life-saving aid to address critical needs amid widespread shortages of essential items and limited access to basic services. This funding will help provide emergency food and nutrition assistance, necessary health care, logistics support, safe water and sanitation, and protection services, including gender-based violence prevention and response, for the most vulnerable individuals in Sudan and surrounding countries.
USAID’s Disaster Assistance Response Team continues to lead the US government’s emergency response for millions of people in Sudan in close coordination with the US Department of State’s Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration, which focuses on needs in neighbouring countries.
The United States is working closely with a wide range of regional partners to gather information regarding humanitarian needs, engage with critical stakeholders in Sudan and across the region, and determine the best ways to quickly and safely deliver humanitarian assistance to people in need where conditions allow.
During this time, The US remained committed to supporting the people of Sudan and countries hosting Sudanese refugees by ensuring they receive the help they need as quickly as possible.
To facilitate humanitarian operations, the United States calls on government entities in Sudan and neighbouring countries to decrease administrative and bureaucratic barriers that limit relief organizations’ ability to respond to this crisis at scale.
