Dominica taking steps to improve fisheries and agriculture sectors

The island nation of Dominica is going through some major steps in the sectors of agriculture and fisheries under the government of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. The officials are working in collaboration on many projects to shape the sector for economic benefits.

In order to take forward the vision of PM Roosevelt Skerrit, Dominica recently hosted a workshop to enhance the fishery sector in collaboration with OECS and the EU. The workshop was four days long and was organized for the communities of Mahaut, Woodford Hill, and Layou.

Under the same approach, LaKeyia Joseph, the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture, Blue and Green Economy for Dominica, met with Chu Maoming, Chinese Ambassador to Dominica.

The meeting between the representatives of the two nations was focused on cooperation in relation to the betterment of the fisheries and agriculture sectors. The two nations are already involved in diplomatic relations and working on several projects like new schools.

Talking about the workshop by OECS and the EU in Dominica, the participants were told about the production of food-grade products, improving food processing and handling. The aim of the workshop was to strengthen the capacity of fisherfolk.

The initiative of the workshop was a part of the broader BioSPACE Project, which is funded by the European Union and administrated by the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States. BioSPACE is a project that focuses on the livelihoods of coastal and inland communities and improving them.

The initiative became the reason for the gathering of 32 Dominican nationals together who are involved in small and micro businesses. The nationals also belonged to the tour guide operations sector. In the decided four days, the workshop covered vast topics related to Data Collection and Branding, Environmental Health and Safety, and Marketing.

The government of Dominica is seriously spending the knowledge related to fish spoilage, quality control, sanitation measures, and good manufacturing practices along with the branding and markets strategioes. It is aimed that the steps will lead to the betterment of not just economic flow but also the local stakeholders and their lives.
