France has announced plans to deliver Mirage 2000 fighter jets to Ukraine in the first quarter of 2025, bolstering Kyiv’s military capabilities amid its ongoing war with Russia.
French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed the delivery on his social media platform “X” (formerly Twitter), noting that the fighter jets will be equipped with advanced air-to-ground weaponry and anti-radio-electronic warfare systems.
This move aligns with France’s broader commitment to support Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression, following a previous statement by President Emmanuel Macron in June.
Macron had revealed plans to supply Ukraine with an unspecified number of Mirage 2000 fighter jets, alongside a comprehensive training program for Ukrainian pilots and mechanics.
Upgrading Ukraine’s Combat Capabilities
The Mirage-2000-5 jets set for delivery are currently undergoing modifications to enhance their ground strike capabilities.
These upgrades, which include integrating new weapons and electronic warfare systems, are being conducted at the General Directorate of Flight Tests in Cazaux, according to the French publication Sud Ouest.
The modifications will ensure that the aircraft are fully equipped to meet the challenges posed by modern warfare, particularly in a conflict marked by a high degree of technological complexity and evolving threats.
The introduction of Mirage 2000 fighter jets is expected to strengthen Ukraine’s ability to carry out both defensive and offensive operations, especially in contested airspace.
The Mirage-2000-5 model, known for its versatility and maneuverability, is a multi-role fighter that can perform air superiority missions as well as precise ground strikes.
This combination of capabilities makes it a valuable asset for Ukraine’s air force as it continues to fend off Russian advances and maintain territorial integrity.
Replacing Aging Aircraft
Military analysts view the Mirage 2000s as a potential replacement for the aging Su-24 bombers currently in Ukraine’s arsenal.
Andrey Kramarov, a reserve officer in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, emphasized that modern combat scenarios demand the use of flexible, multi-role fighter jets, which can adapt to various mission profiles.
The Su-24, while still operational, is becoming increasingly outdated in comparison to the more modern jets employed by both Ukraine and its adversaries.
“The Mirage 2000 offers capabilities that are crucial for today’s combat environment. Its advanced avionics, weapons systems, and versatility give it a distinct advantage over older aircraft like the Su-24,” Kramarov noted.
He added that the aircraft’s ability to operate in both air-to-air and air-to-ground roles would give Ukraine a strategic edge in the ongoing conflict.
Pilot and Mechanic Training
In addition to the delivery of the jets, France has prioritized the training of Ukrainian personnel.
Lecornu highlighted the ongoing training programs for Ukrainian pilots and mechanics, which aim to ensure the smooth integration of the Mirage 2000s into Ukraine’s air force.
Training is a critical component of this initiative, as it ensures that the aircraft can be deployed effectively upon their arrival.
The French government’s decision to supply Ukraine with fighter jets and provide technical training underscores the country’s long-term commitment to supporting Ukraine.
This comes at a time when many Western nations are ramping up their military aid to Kyiv, recognizing the importance of maintaining Ukraine’s defensive and offensive capabilities as the war drags on into its second year.
As the conflict continues, the arrival of the Mirage 2000 jets in early 2025 is expected to significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to defend its skies and carry out strategic operations on the ground, providing much-needed support in its fight against Russian forces.
