“Ground Shadows” exhibition by Anna Zvyagintseva in Mechelen, Ukraine

Mechelen, Ukraine: The Kazerne Dossin Museum, Memorial and Research Centre for the Holocaust and Human Rights in Mechelen opened a heartbreaking exhibition, “Ground Shadows” by Ukrainian artist Anna Zvyagintseva yesterday (Wednesday), September 19, 2023.

As per the Update, “Ground Shadows” is an art project that weaves together the tragic events of the Second World War and the current Russian war against Ukraine. On 29-30 September 1941, 33,771 Kyiv Jews were shot dead in Babyn Yar. On March 1 2022, during the Russian attack on Kyiv, a rocket hit Babyn Yar, killing five people.

The Ukrainian Embassy remarked that it was not just an exhibition but a story that tells of the violence that has returned to Babyn Yar and Ukraine time and time again.

They also said that this story brings tears to their eyes and hearts sink with unbearable pain for all those whose lives were taken by the terrorist country.

The Embassy of Ukraine is immensely grateful to the artist Anna Zvyagintseva, as well as to the Past / Future / Art Culture Platform and the IZOLYATSIA. Platform for Cultural Initiatives. For highlighting such an important topic and the fact that today, Russia is repeating past events and killing innocent Ukrainians.

The Embassy also paid special heartfelt gratitude to the Flanders Chancellery and Foreign Office for supporting this project, Ukraine and Ukrainians, in such a challenging and crucial time for them and the whole of Europe.

The “Ground Shadows” exhibition is open in Ukraine till Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the Kazerne Dossin in Mechelen.

Address: Goswin de Stassartstraat 153, 2800 Mechelen, Belgium
Don’t miss the opportunity to see Anna Zvyagintseva’s works, which create a space for reflection, mourning, and remembrance.
