Saint Lucia: A delegation from the island nation under the leadership of Philip J Pierre, the serving Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, visited the neighbouring nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. The prime minister took note of the conditions of the people of the nation after getting impacted by Hurricane Beryl. The leader discussed essential issues related to climate financing and more during his visit.
The primary intention of the visit of PM Philip J Pierre to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was to go through the damage caused by Hurricane Beryl in the neighbouring nation in the region. The leaders of the other Caribbean nations also visited the island nation along with Saint Lucia for the same purpose. PM Pierre expressed his support for the island country during an appearance in front of the media.
The Saint Lucian delegation visited the place of destruction around the island and observed the highly damaging impact of Hurricane Beryl. The PM of Saint Lucia also visited Union Island, where the most losses were recorded during the natural disaster. On the island, more of the places were damaged, and the people living there also suffered.
The locals are living in temporary shelters after losing their houses due to the heavy rainfalls and winds at the time of the hurricane. The conditions are reported to be very much similar to that of the Carriacou island, which the Saint Lucian delegation headed last week during their visit to Grenada. Many such islands around the region were affected by the recent climate disaster, leaving people helpless, who are still collecting their lives.
In the statement given by PM Philip J Pierre, he extended his support to the nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to overcome this challenging time. The leader also showed his sympathy for the suffering of the people, including the children. The PM stated that he has knowledge of the communities facing problems and how he checked all the places and their conditions.
In his words, Philip J Pierre also highlighted the need to add more contributions to climate financing. The loader stated that the nations need to focus on the issues that the Caribbean can see due to climate change and other climate disasters. He proposed his idea to increase climate financing for Small Island Developing States on an urgent basis.
The PM of Saint Lucia mentioned that the increase in financial support is the necessity of the time to overcome the substantial damages cause to the infrastructure and economies due to climate disasters. Financial support is more important for the Small Island Developing States. The PM added that the situation of the people in Saint Vincent and Grenada and other islands shows that this is a time of global solidarity.
