Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) showcased their dominance in French football with a commanding 3-0 victory over Olympique de Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome on Sunday, October 27.
The win not only marked a crucial step in PSG’s campaign but also sent them three points clear at the top of Ligue 1, following AS Monaco’s surprising first defeat of the season against Nice.
The eagerly anticipated match, known as Le Classique, was effectively decided before halftime. PSG raced to a three-goal lead, capitalizing on a series of errors from their rivals.
The turning point came in the 20th minute when Marseille’s Amine Harit received a straight red card for a dangerous high boot on PSG’s Marquinhos, leaving his team with a numerical disadvantage.
PSG’s young Portuguese midfielder Joao Neves opened the scoring just seven minutes into the match. He capitalized on a mistake by Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli, who mishandled a routine catch, allowing Neves to pounce and give the visitors an early advantage. This goal set the tone for a dominant first half for PSG.
The situation worsened for Marseille when their captain, Leonardo Balerdi, inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 29th minute, doubling PSG’s lead.
As if things couldn’t get worse, Bradley Barcola added a third goal shortly before halftime, marking his eighth of the season and effectively ending any hopes of a comeback for the home side.
By the time the whistle blew for halftime, many Marseille fans were already making their way out of the stadium, frustrated by their team’s performance.
PSG coach Luis Enrique expressed his satisfaction with the result, stating, “It’s a very positive result. That is a given when you win a Classique away from home with such authority. We dedicate this victory to the fans. It’s an important match for them and for our place in the table.”
His praise for the team’s performance was evident, as they not only secured a vital three points but also demonstrated their intent to reclaim the Ligue 1 title.
The defeat marked a difficult night for Marseille’s head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, whose team had been in strong form at the beginning of the season. Entering the match, Marseille aimed to equal PSG’s points tally of 20 with a victory.
However, this latest defeat extends their winless streak at home against PSG in the league to 12 matches. Despite their earlier successes, the match highlighted the challenges Marseille faces in competing against their arch-rivals.
Marseille’s Harit, now suspended following his red card, expressed his regret, acknowledging that the sending-off significantly altered the match’s dynamics.
“The sending-off changed the game,” Luis Enrique commented post-match, noting how it shifted the balance of play heavily in PSG’s favor.
With this victory, PSG solidifies its position at the top of Ligue 1 as they continue to assert their dominance in French football.
As the season progresses, the team will look to build on this momentum, while Marseille will need to regroup quickly to avoid further setbacks as they navigate the remainder of the campaign.
