Les Sables-d’Olonne, France – At just 23 years old, French sailor Violette Dorange has made history by becoming the youngest person ever to complete the prestigious Vendée Globe, a grueling solo, non-stop, round-the-world yacht race.

Dorange crossed the finish line on Sunday, securing 25th place after spending 90 days, 22 hours, and 37 minutes battling the elements at sea. Her remarkable achievement broke the previous record set by Swiss sailor Alan Roura, who had completed the 2016-17 race in 105 days at the age of 23.

The Vendée Globe, often dubbed the “Everest of the Seas,” is known for its extreme challenges, including violent storms, treacherous waves, and relentless isolation. Despite these obstacles, Dorange demonstrated exceptional endurance and skill, navigating some of the most unforgiving waters on the planet.

Following in the Footsteps of Legends

Dorange’s feat has drawn comparisons to Ellen MacArthur, the British sailing legend who finished second in the 2000-01 Vendée Globe at the age of 24, completing her race in 94 days, four hours, and 25 minutes.

“Her accomplishment comes some 24 years after the second-place finish of the legendary British sailor Ellen MacArthur,” the Vendée Globe organization said in a statement, highlighting the historic significance of Dorange’s performance.

Dorange has been making waves in the sailing world for years. Ranked 14th in the 2024 IMOCA championship, she has competed in some of the most elite offshore races, handling cutting-edge 60-foot yachts designed for high-speed ocean racing.

A Race of Extreme Challenges

The 2024-25 Vendée Globe saw 40 skippers set sail from Les Sables-d’Olonne, France, on November 10, 2024. Throughout her journey, Dorange faced harsh weather conditions, mechanical difficulties, and extreme fatigue.

“Every day at sea was a challenge. There were moments of doubt, exhaustion, and frustration, but I never stopped believing in myself and my boat,” Dorange said upon arrival.

Her perseverance and determination were evident in her steady performance, as she managed to stay competitive despite the physical and mental toll of the race.

A Bright Future in Offshore Sailing

With her Vendée Globe finish, Dorange has cemented her reputation as one of the most promising young sailors in offshore racing. Her success is expected to open new opportunities for her in future editions of the race and other prestigious sailing competitions.

As she stepped onto solid ground for the first time in three months, Dorange was met with cheers and applause from fans, supporters, and fellow sailors. Her journey has inspired a new generation of sailors, proving that youth and determination can overcome even the toughest challenges at sea.

With this record-breaking finish, Violette Dorange has not only secured her place in sailing history but also set a new benchmark for young adventurers looking to conquer the world’s most demanding yacht race.
