Antoine Dupont, widely recognized as the best rugby player in the world, has added yet another feather to his cap after leading France to Olympic gold in rugby sevens this July.
The scrum-half played a pivotal role in his national team’s success, further solidifying his status in the sport following a remarkable summer with his club, Toulouse, where he helped secure a record 23rd league title and a sixth Champions Cup crown.
At a ceremony held in central Paris, Dupont was named the Top 14 Player of the Year, an accolade that underscores his immense talent and contributions to the sport.
This marks the fourth consecutive year that he has been recognized as the best French international player, showcasing his consistent excellence on the field.
Dupont’s achievement is particularly significant as it represents his third double victory as the best player in both the league and the national team, with previous wins in 2021 and 2023.
Dupont’s achievements come in a season marked by his remarkable performance during the Olympic Games, where France triumphed over Fiji to secure their first gold medal in rugby sevens.
After a grueling year of competition, Dupont was kept in reserve by his Toulouse club, allowing him to recover from the rigors of the season.
He is anticipated to return to the Top 14 pitch by early to mid-October, just in time for three November tests against Japan, New Zealand, and Argentina.
Stade Toulousain, the two-time defending champions and winners of last year’s league and Champions Cup double, also celebrated success at the ceremony, being awarded the title of best management staff under the guidance of coach Ugo Mola.
This recognition reflects the club’s commitment to excellence and teamwork, with Dupont serving as a key figure in their achievements.
Reflecting on his successful year, Dupont expressed gratitude during his acceptance speech. “You have to measure how lucky you are to win trophies, be that as a team or individually,” he remarked.
“It’s always nice to have nights like this… We were lucky to feel incredible emotions, be that with Toulouse or the Olympic medal. We’ve realized that we’ve done something great this year.”
In addition to Dupont’s accolades, the ceremony also recognized other outstanding talents in French rugby.
Jeremy Ward, the South African centre from Stade Français, and Tevita Tatafu, the Japanese No.8 from Bordeaux-Bègles, were shortlisted for the prestigious Player of the Year award, voted by their peers in the top French league.
In the women’s category, Seraphine Okemba was honored with the women’s international award, while Pau winger Theo Attissogbe earned the title of breakthrough player of the season.
The best try of the Top 14 season was awarded to Stade Français winger Penisai Dakuwaqa for a spectacular 100-meter solo run, showcasing the thrilling talent within French rugby.
With Dupont at the helm, France rugby continues to flourish, and fans eagerly await his return to the pitch as he leads his team into another competitive season.
