Dominica extends Douglas-Charles Airport to boost tourism

Dominica took steps to build infrastructure and develop the Douglas-Charles Airport to fulfill the growing need. The government of Dominica is taking constant steps under the vision of Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit to stand along the requirements of the future.

The update on the development of the Douglas-Charles Airport was shared by the Dominica Ministry of Tourism through its official page. The same update was also shared by PM Roosevelt Skerrit on Monday, 16 September, from his own social media account.

The aim of the government of Dominica with the infrastructural development of the Douglas-Charles Airport is to improve tourism on the island. It is disclosed by the authorities that the plan is to host more and more tourists coming to the nation, and the expected target is 500,000 visitors by 2030.

The project was to extend the Douglas-Charles Airport’s Runway to 1,936 meters or 6,351 feets to accommodate big aircarfts and also more number of flights. The decision was taken by the officials by keeping the emerging market in mind and also the increasing number of visitors on the island under the framework in use.

Dominica Ministry of Tourism mentioned, “We are making significant progress toward our goal of welcoming 500,000 visitors by 2030, tackling one of our biggest challenges. With the extension of Douglas-Charles Airport’s Runway to 1,936 meters (6351 FT), we are opening the door to more source markets and larger aircraft.”

Ministry also added, “This is a game-changer. Imagine direct flights not just to Miami but other major cities, a dream that is now becoming reality. We’re paving the way, literally, for a brighter future for Dominica.”

The authority mentioned that the project of development for the Douglas-Charles Airport is not just aimed at the extension but also to keep other standards in focus. In the implementation of the plan, safety was also considered along with other key requirements, like in wet conditions.

The ministry said, “But that is not all. Grooving the runway enhances safety, even in wet conditions. Pilots can now land with more confidence, and fewer cancellations mean more reliable routes for airlines. It is a win-win for everyone, including visitors, residents, and our tourism partners.”

PM Roosevelt Skerrit also mentioned, “The extension and grooving of the runway at the Douglas-Charles Airport will improve access and safety, attracting larger aircraft and leading to an increase in visitor arrivals.”
