Elimination diet: Purpose, method, and more!

An elimination diet helps a person identify foods that cause him discomfort or symptoms that lead to allergy. The experts prescribe the diet under strict supervision. There are risks as well as benefits of the elimination diet. About 20% of the population around the world have some allergies and food-related intolerance.

An elimination diet helps an individual recognize weakness in symptoms that can cause discomfort in the future. Some kinds of food can worsen the symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux, migraine, autoimmune disorders, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), among other health issues.

Some dieticians and specialists recommend this diet for anyone who is going through these triggers. People may avoid this kind of food item for some time, but they resume these items after this diet.

The non-IgE-mediated reaction is a medical term for this kind of allergy that can affect a person’s health but are not life-threatening. If anyone has a food allergy, it directly affects the immune system and can be very harmful. 5% of the kids and 4% of the adults in the United States are affected by this kind of allergy.

Symptoms that include non-IgE-mediated allergic reactions are constipation, diarrhea, eczema, hives, insomnia, among others. If people are found with these symptoms, their doctors can recommend an elimination diet.

An elimination diet can also help individuals recognize their intolerance towards some food items. These items are very different from allergies and do not affect the immune system. Intolerance is difficulty in digesting some of the food, and they have some discomfort.

Intolerance symptoms can include stomach pain, bloating, headaches, excess gas, diarrhea, etc., according to allergies and intolerances, and a dietician will recommend an elimination diet plan.

There are different subtypes in the diet. There is a low Food map diet, few foods diet, and autoimmune protocol diet.
An elimination diet has its advantages and disadvantages and has to follow after the recommendation from a dietician. There is also a risk of nutritional deficiencies.
