France Stages Dramatic Comeback to Eliminate Croatia and Reach Nations League Semi-Finals

Paris, France – France mounted a stunning comeback to overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit and defeat Croatia on penalties, securing their place in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League.

In front of a packed Stade de France on Sunday night, Didier Deschamps’ side delivered a dominant performance, winning 5-4 in a dramatic shootout to set up a last-four clash with Spain in June.

Croatia had claimed a 2-0 victory in the first leg in Zagreb on Thursday, giving them the upper hand heading into the return fixture.

However, Les Bleus responded with a commanding display, scoring twice in normal time to force extra time before sealing their triumph from the penalty spot.

Olise and Dembele Inspire French Comeback

Despite a scoreless first half, France’s relentless attacking pressure paid off in the 52nd minute when Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise produced a moment of brilliance.

The former Crystal Palace star curled a stunning 25-yard free-kick over the Croatian wall, leaving goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic rooted to the spot.

The hosts continued to press for a second goal, but Croatia, runners-up in the 2023 Nations League, appeared set to advance with just ten minutes remaining.

However, France’s persistence was rewarded when in-form forward Ousmane Dembélé slotted home from close range after Olise provided a clever cutback, leveling the tie on aggregate.

With the momentum in their favor, Les Bleus pushed for a winner in extra time, and Kylian Mbappé had three golden opportunities to put the game beyond doubt.

But Livakovic, who was outstanding between the posts, denied the French captain on each occasion, ensuring the match would be decided by penalties.

Maignan the Hero in Tense Shootout

The penalty shootout was a nerve-wracking affair, with France goalkeeper Mike Maignan emerging as the hero. The AC Milan shot-stopper saved Croatia’s first effort from Martin Baturina, before Franjo Ivanovic fired his attempt over the bar.

France had the opportunity to seal victory early, but Jules Koundé and Theo Hernandez both missed, pushing the contest into sudden death.

The decisive moment came when Maignan produced another crucial save, this time denying Josip Stanisic. It was then left to Dayot Upamecano to step up, and the Bayern Munich defender calmly slotted home the winning penalty to spark jubilant celebrations in Paris.

France Eyes Second Nations League Title

With the victory, France continues its pursuit of a second Nations League title, having previously won the competition in 2021.

The semi-final matchup against European champions Spain promises to be a thrilling encounter as Les Bleus aim to reclaim the trophy.

Meanwhile, Croatia will be left to reflect on a missed opportunity after coming agonizingly close to another deep run in the tournament.

As a result of their quarter-final success, France will also enter World Cup Qualifying Group D alongside Azerbaijan, Iceland, and Ukraine.

Croatia, on the other hand, will compete in Group L, facing the Czech Republic, Faroe Islands, Gibraltar, and Montenegro as they shift their focus to future international campaigns.
