As the countdown to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games intensifies, organizers are facing an unexpected challenge: the unusually high flow rate of the Seine River.
Recent heavy rainfall across the Paris region has caused the Seine to swell significantly, reaching over 500 cubic meters per second at the Paris-Austerlitz flowmeter station.
This rate, four to five times the normal summer flow, has sparked concerns among officials responsible for the Games’ opening ceremony.
Scheduled for the evening of July 26th, the ceremony is set to unfold between the Austerlitz and Iéna bridges, where the current water conditions may disrupt planned activities.
Thierry Reboul, director of ceremonies for Paris 2024, expressed apprehension over the river’s impact on boat speeds and maneuverability crucial for the event.
“Boats are no longer going at 9 km/h but at 12 km/h,” Reboul stated, highlighting the potential challenges in synchronizing the river parade with the quayside spectacle.
Despite these concerns, organizers remain cautiously optimistic. Marc Guillaume, prefect of the Paris region, reassured that adjustments are underway to mitigate potential disruptions.
Plans include substituting high-profile boats with more maneuverable alternatives, ensuring they can navigate under the city’s bridges even at higher water levels.
Guillaume projected that with the expected stabilization of the Seine’s flow around 300 cubic meters per second, the ceremony can proceed as planned.
The management of the Seine’s flow during such conditions relies heavily on four strategically located reservoirs to the east of Paris.
These reservoirs, managed by the Etablissement Public Territorial de Bassin (EPTB) Seine Grands Lacs, play a crucial role in regulating the river’s levels, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.
Baptiste Blanchard, director general of EPTB, noted the exceptional nature of the current situation, likening it to historical events like the centennial flood of 1910.
