Lufthansa will cancel 800 flights on Friday following pilots call for strike

Lufthansa is likely to cancel 800 flights on Friday 2 September after the German airline’s pilots announced a strike. The strike action will have an impact on people travelling to Belgium too.
As per Lufthansa, “Almost all flights to and from Frankfurt and Munich will be impacted, adding that 130,000 travellers are affected, but they will be able to rebook their flights.
The majority of Lufthansa flights to and from Frankfurt and Munich to Zaventem airport have been cancelled, as per the Brussels Airport. Despite parent company Lufthansa’s strike, Brussels Airlines itself is not expected to have any issues. Brussels Airlines is likely to have extra, rebooked passengers because of the cancelled Lufthansa flights.
Lufthansa pilots are striking after they rejected a new salary proposal from Lufthansa management, the union Vereinigung Cockpit rejected HR director Michael Niggemann called it a “very good, socially balanced proposal”, which came “despite the lingering burden of the corona crisis and uncertain prospects for the global economy.”
However, the pilots’ trade union Vereinigung Cockpit is asking for a wage increase of 5.5% as well as automatic wage indexes from next year for its over 5,000 pilots.
As per Lufthansa spokesperson said on Thursday, “We hope to get back to negotiations as soon as possible. However, we cannot bear the cost increases associated with VC’s demands either.”
Lufthansa security workers and ground staff have already gone on strike over pay.
