Mbappe Shines as Real Madrid Reclaims La Liga Lead with Dominant Victory

Madrid, Spain – Kylian Mbappe delivered a stellar performance as Real Madrid reclaimed the top spot in La Liga with a 4-1 victory over Las Palmas on Sunday.

The French forward scored twice, helping Los Blancos capitalize on Atletico Madrid’s shocking defeat and Barcelona’s draw over the weekend.

Madrid’s triumph saw them move two points ahead of their city rivals after Atletico Madrid stumbled against Leganes, while Barcelona, in third, failed to secure a win at Getafe.

Mbappe, who has found his rhythm in recent weeks, played a key role in securing the win, bringing his tally to 12 league goals this season.

Early Shock but Strong Response

Despite Real Madrid’s dominant display, Las Palmas stunned the Santiago Bernabeu just 30 seconds into the match. A swift attacking move saw Sandro Ramirez set up Fabio Silva for an easy finish, silencing the home crowd. However, Madrid responded swiftly, piling pressure on the visitors’ defense.

Mbappe, who had faced criticism for missing two penalties late in 2024, made amends by winning and converting a spot-kick after being fouled by Sandro. His equalizer restored confidence within the team and the home supporters.

The French star remained central to Madrid’s attacking prowess, playing a key role in their second goal. After his initial shot was saved by Las Palmas goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen, Lucas Vazquez squared the ball to Brahim Diaz, who slotted home to put Madrid ahead.

Mbappe Leads the Charge

Mbappe’s second goal showcased his trademark finishing ability. After a clever cutback from Rodrygo Goes, the forward curled a brilliant shot into the top corner, leaving Cillessen with no chance.

The 26-year-old nearly secured a hat-trick before halftime, but the goal was disallowed for offside in the buildup. However, Madrid continued their dominance in the second half, with Rodrygo adding a fourth goal after connecting with Fran Garcia’s low cross.

Further goals from Jude Bellingham and Fede Valverde were ruled out for offside, but Madrid’s performance ensured a comfortable victory, reinforcing their position as league leaders.

Mbappe Thrives Under Ancelotti’s System

Mbappe’s integration into Carlo Ancelotti’s squad has been a topic of debate, with the manager previously deploying him as a central striker instead of his preferred left-wing role. However, Ancelotti has remained firm in his tactical choice.

“He’s the best central striker in the world,” Ancelotti stated post-match. “He’s more comfortable in the middle, where he can fully exploit his ability to break past defenders.”

Mbappe, reflecting on his performance, expressed his satisfaction with his adaptation to Madrid’s system.

“I am very happy. I have adapted to the team, and I can play how I want, with my teammates, with personality,” said the French international. “We have to stay united, and like that, we can go for all the trophies.”

Alaba Returns, Ceballos Impresses

The match also marked the return of David Alaba, who stepped onto the pitch after more than a year sidelined with a severe knee injury. His comeback was celebrated by teammates, with Dani Ceballos highlighting his importance to the squad.

“You don’t know how much it means for us to have him back on the pitch,” Ceballos told DAZN.

Ceballos, who put in an impressive display, received an ovation from the home crowd and vowed to continue working hard to contribute to the team.

With the victory, Madrid reclaimed their place at the summit of La Liga, signaling their intent to remain in the title race as the season progresses.
