Paris 2024 Olympics Opening Ceremony Plans Undeterred Despite Recent Attack Near Eiffel Tower

Paris, France: In the wake of the tragic incident near the Eiffel Tower on Saturday, where a man armed with a knife and hammer killed a German tourist and injured two others, the French sports minister, Amelie Oudea-Castera, declared on Monday that there is no “plan B” for the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Summer Games.

The 26-year-old suspect, a French national, was arrested after the attack and had reportedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in a pre-recorded video, according to anti-terrorism Prosecutor Jean-Francois Ricard on Sunday.

The attack occurred on the Quai de Grenelle, a location included in the plans for the Paris 2024 Olympics opening ceremony.

Oudea-Castera, speaking on France Inter radio, emphasized that while there is no specific alternative plan, the existing plan incorporates flexibility with various sub-plans and adjustment variables.

She reassured the public, stating, “We have the capacity to secure the event,” and underlined that the government is not currently considering a change to the decision to hold the ceremony on the River Seine.
