General strike began on streets of France: REPORTS

A General strike began on the streets of France on Thursday, March 23, 2023, as per the sources. Millions of people were in the streets, with 200 protesters nationwide. There were teachers, gas and electric workers and many more on strike.

The series of general strikes began in France on Sunday, January 19 2023. The strike occurred as the people refused the french pension reform bill proposed by the Government regarding an increase in the retirement age. The strike has led to widespread destruction, such as garbage piling on streets and cancellations of public transport.

The French pension bill of 2023 aims to exceed the retirement age from 62 to 64 years. It has become the most controversial news in France as the Government invoked article 49.3 in the french constitution allowing a draft bill to pass without a vote unless the Assembly holds a no-confidence motion on the account—the Two no-confidence motion actions passed within the required timeframe took place on Monday, March 20 2023.

Reportedly the bill was introduced in the National Assembly on January 30, 2023, and Article 2 of the draft law was rejected by the Assembly by 53 votes on February 14, 2023.

The Borne Government invoked Article 47-1 on February 17, 2023, which Article states that if the National Assembly doesn’t consider all provisions of a social security financing bill within 20 days of introduction, the account can be transmitted and considered by the Senate without standing the fact that Assembly has not yet voted for it in its entirety and is tabled within 24 hours, which in case the bill adopted after the said motion is defeated.

The Opposition groups consequently filed the Two such motions within the required timeframe. In comparison, Both voted down on March 20, 2023, allowing the bill to pass. The bill is expected to be formally signed by President Emmanuel Macron.
