Ghana: One of Africa’s most recognised and leading Universities, Ashesi University welcomed German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to campus on Tuesday, October 31, 2023.
Chancellor Scholz visited campus ahead of a meeting with Ghana’s President. The meeting was part of an effort to learn from the perspectives of young people during his time in Ghana.
The Chancellor was accompanied by the German Ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull and other representatives from the German Embassy in Accra and Ghana’s Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah.
The town hall was opened with students sharing their vision of Africa’s future and what they believed would be essential in creating this future.
Across the three presentations shared by students, the emphasis was on several key pillars, including effective representation for young people, enabling opportunities for innovation through collaboration, and the importance of education and skills training.
In his responses to student presentations and questions, Chancellor Scholz emphasised his agreement that Africa’s future will be defined by the continent’s young people and leaders. He also highlighted the power of two-way collaboration and the importance of shared learning between young Germans and young Africans.
The Ghanaian politician and Former President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, also shared about the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s visit.
The purpose of the visit by the Chancellor is to re-affirm the ties of cooperation and the bonds of friendship that our two countries attach to their relations with each other.
The Chancellor and Ghanaian politician Nana Addo discussed at length how to boost further their economic, political and security relations, cultural and people-to-people exchanges, as well as their cooperation at the continental and multilateral levels.
Their deliberations also centred on driving investment opportunities, domestic and foreign, into their two countries and the need for enhanced cooperation and partnership in the development efforts.
