On Monday, The ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council declared Abdul Rehman Makki, the founder of Lashkar-e-Taiba and the brother-in-law of Hafiz Saeed, a global terrorist.
Following Security Council resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011), and 2253 (2015) concerning ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida, and associated individuals and groups, the Security Council Committee backed the addition entry specified below to its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List of individuals and entities subject to the asset freeze, travel restriction, and arms prohibition set out in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2610 (2021) on January 16, 2023.
Under their domestic law, India and US already declared Makki a terrorist for his involvement in increasing funds for terrorist organisations active in Pakistan, recruiting and propagandise youngsters to perform attacks in India, especially in Jammu & Kashmir; the territory has been disputed since the partition in 1947.
Pakistan’s government arrested Makki in 2019 for financing a terrorist organisation named Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is still active in the region. His imprisonment has no effect, as the terrorist group still disturbs peace and stability in the area.
Hafiz Saeed, the mastermind of the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai that killed 168 innocent people, including 18 security personnel, is the brother-in-law of Makki. In the US-designated foreign terrorist organisation LeT, he has held various senior positions (FTO). He has also contributed to the effort to raise money for LeT operations.
China always blocked India’s path of declaring terrorists, especially those sheltered by Pakistan.
The country continuously rejected India’s attempts to recognise Maulana Masood Azhar, the leader of the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist group established in Pakistan and prohibited by the UN (JeM).
On October 19, China also stood in the way of India and the US designating Hafiz Talha Saeed, the son of Hafeez Saeed, as a foreign terrorist organisation. For the sixth time in a row, China attempted to save Pakistani terrorists, but they were unsuccessful. Given that Pakistan is currently experiencing one of the worst economic crises, it is a great victory for India and a major issue for that nation.
