Srinagar- To resume further pandemic research, the Indian government plans to open a regional National Institute of Virology in Jammu and Kashmir. Chandigarh (Punjab) was originally supposed to be the location of the regional NIV for the northern region.
But, the project will now be carried out in Jammu because of a land issue in Chandigarh. According to a report from the parliamentary standing committee on health and family welfare, Chandigarh’s land conflict is to blame for the change of venue.
On March 15, 2023, they delivered the report to the Parliament. According to the article, a decision has yet to be made regarding the location of Jammu’s National Institute of Virology. The Jammu UT authorities initially chose a site, but a committee later declared it unfit.
The authority has now proposed three further prospective locations, and an evaluation team from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is soon to visit Jammu to evaluate them. The report provides an overview of these data.
In addition to Jammu, the locations for three regional National Institutes of Virology (NIV) have been confirmed, according to the study.
The location for Jammu’s NIV is reportedly still up for discussion. According to the article, the other three NIVs will be built in Dibrugarh, Bangalore, and Jabalpur.
