PM Skerrit mourns death of Vanoulst Jno Charles, recalls his contribution as Senator & teacher

Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit mourned the death of Vanoulst Jno Charles of St Joseph, who served as a Senator in the Dominica Parliament from November 3, 1978 to June 21, 1979.

The Executive and Members of the Dominica Labour Party expressed their grief and sorrow to the family on the passing of Charles, his party stalwart, who gave yeoman service to the agriculture sector.

PM Skerrit recalled his contribution to the development of Dominica as the first schoolteacher. Charles became the Chairman of the Dominica Banana Marketing Corporation (DBMC) and the President of the Windward Islands Banana Growers Association (WINBAN).

He also served in the field of agriculture as a full-time banana and citrus farmer.

Under the leadership of the former Senator, the agriculture sector improved, and farmers of Windward Islands experienced remarkable growth.

It is worth noting that Charles was appointed as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) and Commissioner of the Integrity Commission, and he was honored with the Sisserou Award of Honour, which is Dominica’s second highest national honor.

He has helped in strengthening the Dominica Labour Party base in the St Joseph Constituency. The entire Labour Party extended their gratitude for his years of commitment and dedication and his valuable guidance on the matters of governance, politics, and community engagement.

The nation has expressed its grief on the passing of former Senator Charles through their comments on social media (Facebook).

While reacting to the news, a person named Jeanette Jean-Luke commented, “Deepest sympathy to the entire family. He was a respected legend in our community, a politician, and a farmer.

One of my memories of him was his visit to London with the Prime Minister. Rest in Paradise Mr Vanoulst.”

Another FB user, Bertha Joseph, wrote, “My sincere condolences to Mr Jno Charles’ family, friends and colleagues. May his gentle Soul RIP & rise in Glory.”
