Brice Samba Joins Rennes in Long-Term Deal as Lens Opts for Goalkeeper Reshuffle

RENNES, France (AP) — French goalkeeper Brice Samba has officially joined Rennes from league rival Lens, in a move that underscores the Brittany club’s intent to bolster its squad under new coach Jorge Sampaoli.

Samba, who serves as France’s second-choice goalkeeper behind Mike Maignan, has signed a contract that will keep him at Rennes until 2029.

The financial terms of the transfer were not disclosed, but the addition of Samba signals a strategic investment in solidifying Rennes‘ defense. The 30-year-old is expected to make his debut for the team this weekend in a league clash against his former club, Marseille.

Career Highlights

Samba joined Lens in 2022 after a pivotal stint at Nottingham Forest, where he played a key role in securing the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

Over his time with Lens, he made 96 appearances, establishing himself as a dependable and commanding presence in goal.

His consistent performances earned him a spot in the French national team, where he has already earned three caps.

“I want to be as decisive as possible,” Samba said during his unveiling. “That’s what got me into the French national team, and I hope to continue in that vein.”

Lens’ Goalkeeping Reshuffle

As Samba departs for Rennes, Lens has moved quickly to secure his replacement. Spanish goalkeeper Pau Lopez has joined the northern club on loan from Marseille until the end of the season, with an option to make the move permanent.

Lopez, also 30, began the season on loan at Spanish club Girona, where he made just one appearance in the Spanish Cup.

At Lens, he is set to take over the No. 1 spot from Burkina Faso goalkeeper Hervé Koffi, who played in Lens’ recent French Cup defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties.

Sampaoli’s Strategic Signings

Samba’s arrival is the second major addition to Rennes under recently hired coach Jorge Sampaoli. Earlier this month, the club secured Ivory Coast midfielder Seko Fofana, another former Lens player, who signed a contract extending until 2029 after a brief stint in Saudi Arabia.

Sampaoli’s moves reflect a clear strategy to enhance the squad as Rennes seeks to climb the league standings. The team currently sits in 13th place after 16 rounds, trailing league leaders PSG by 23 points.

Looking Ahead

Rennes will hope that Samba’s experience and leadership can provide a much-needed boost to their campaign.

As the team prepares for the second half of the season, the focus will be on turning around their fortunes and pushing for a stronger finish.

For Lens, Lopez’s arrival marks the start of a new chapter in goalkeeping, with the club aiming to maintain their competitiveness in domestic and international competitions.

Both Samba and Lopez have a lot to prove in their new roles, and all eyes will be on their performances as the French league action resumes.
