Taiwan must increase surveillance and alertness across region over Ukraine dispute
Taiwan must ensure to increase its surveillance and alertness on military activities across the region and tackle foreign misinformation, quoted by President Tsai lng-wen on Wednesday during a meeting about Ukraine, wary of China’s movements around the island.
China, which has been claiming Taiwan as its own territory, has stepped up military activity near the self-governing island over the past two years. However, Taiwan has had no unusual manoeuvres by Chinese troops in recent as tensions on Ukraine have been soaring.
During a meeting of her National Security Council’s working group on the Ukraine crisis, Tsai said all security and military units “must increase their surveillance and early warning of military developments around the Taiwan Strait.”
According to the statement released by Tsai’s office, she stated, “Taiwan and Ukraine are fundamentally different in terms of geostrategy, geography and international supply chains.”
It cited Tsai as saying, “But in the face of foreign forces intending to manipulate the situation in Ukraine and affect the morale of Taiwanese society, all government units must empower the prevention of cognitive warfare launched by foreign forces and local collaborations.”
At the same time, the statement did not mention any name of China but the country’s most significant military threats that Taiwan faces.
She further expressed “empathy” for Ukraine’s situation because of the military threat the island is facing because of China.
