The Embassy of Belgium in the United States of America extended their pleasure and congratulated Professor Marleen Temmerman. She was celebrated as a new American Academy of Arts & Sciences member at MIT in Boston.
The Embassy of Belgium honoured Professor Marleen Temmerman for her contributions and recognized some crucial points about her. She was presented with the award during an induction ceremony at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge at the end of September.
The Embassy called her the world’s most meritorious gynaecologist, a true advocate for women, adolescent and child health and rights.
As per the Update, Temmerman is the first Belgian woman to receive membership in the AAAS. And if that wasn’t enough, she was awarded the prestigious International Fellowship of the National Academy of Medicines in Washington, DC.
Temmerman’s achievements have enabled her to work with governments, multilateral organizations, academia, development agencies, consultancy agencies, civil society, and non-governmental organizations. She has received several awards and honours for her research and advocacy work.
As a further recognition for her outstanding contributions to healthcare, she was elected as an International Honorary Member to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in April 2022.
Marleen Temmerman is now Director of the Center of Excellence in Women and Child Health and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Aga Khan University East Africa in Nairobi.
She is also the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair on Youth Leadership in Science, Health, Gender and Education.
In 2012, she was appointed director of the Department of Reproductive Health and Research at the World Health Organization (WHO), which strives for worldwide improvement of reproductive and sexual health.
Marleen Temmerman is the founding director of the International Centre of Reproductive Health at Ghent University, Belgium, where she studied medicine and became the first female professor of gynaecology of obstetrics and gynaecology in Belgium.
