Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo confirmed on Saturday that the iconic Eiffel Tower will retain the Olympic rings that have adorned it since June, even after the conclusion of the ongoing Paralympic Games. In an interview with French daily Ouest-France, Hidalgo emphasized that the decision to keep the rings was made with the support of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
“As mayor of Paris, the decision is up to me and I have the agreement of the IOC,” Hidalgo stated. While she did not specify the duration for which the rings would remain on the tower, she assured the public that they would be a lasting symbol of the Olympic spirit in the city.
Hidalgo also revealed that the current rings, which have been in place since the beginning of the Olympic festivities, would be replaced by five lighter rings of the same size. This decision was made due to concerns that the existing rings are “too heavy” to be sustained for an extended period. The new rings will be designed to ensure they can be safely displayed for a longer time.
In addition to the rings, Hidalgo expressed her desire to keep the Olympic cauldron in the Tuileries Gardens, a proposal that is currently under review. However, as the Tuileries Gardens are state property, the final decision on this matter will rest with President Emmanuel Macron.
