Xbox is a brand for video games owned and developed by Microsoft. The brand consists of five video game consoles and software (games). It also has streaming platforms, the Xbox Live online service, and the Xbox Game Studios production arm. With the first Xbox console’s introduction in November 2001, the brand was first released in the United States. 

When and where was it released first?

After the Atari Jaguar discontinued sales in 1996, the original unit of first video game console was sold by an American company. As of May 2006, it had reached over 24 million units sold. Subsequently, the second console from Microsoft, the Xbox 360, was released in 2005. It sold 84 million units as of June 2014.

The third Xbox One console was released in 21 countries, with a Chinese release in September 2014. November 2020 saw the fourth and fifth consoles’ release, the Xbox Series X and S Series. Phil Spencer, who replaced former boss Marc Whitten in late March 2014, is the Xbox head. 

 

The first PlayStation 2 was unveiled by Sony Computer Entertainment in 1999. Certainly, the company had placed the console as a centerpiece for home entertainment. It would not only play video games but could also play audio CDs and video DVDs. The PlayStation 2 was seen by Microsoft, whose business was mainly to help the personal computer (PC) business with its Windows operating system, applications, and games as a personal computer threat. 

How has the console name chosen?

Numerous titles, including “Direct X Box” and “Windows Entertainment Project,” were suggested for this console. Microsoft’s marketing team conducted customer surveys of the name, using the name “Xbox” as a control. The  assumed that this would be the least acceptable. But later the found that this had the best choice from their studies and was chosen as the console name. 

How is the Xbox dashboard used?

The Xbox Dashboard allows users to control games installed on the console, play media, and access device settings. It has been the key interface for all four Xbox generations. The dashboard has been integrated with Xbox Live since 2002, offering online features and storefront options. Although the original Xbox and Xbox 360 were initially designed on a heavily updated Windows 2000 operating system, the software has been using a Windows-based system since Xbox One (first Windows 8, now Windows 10). It certainly makes console and desktop applications to be easily compatible. 

What is an Xbox family setting app?

In May 2020, Xbox released a beta version of an app that allows parents and guardians to set daily limits for their children’s playing time. It also offers weekly activity reports, filters out age-restricted games, and places online contact limits. This is Microsoft, the maker of Xbox efforts, to spread a message of responsible gaming. The full release is scheduled to take place at the end of 2020 or later.
