Dominica: Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit called China to extend its support to Haiti’s situation while addressing the 8th Round Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China and Caribbean Nations held on Friday, July 7, 2023.

Prime Minister Skerrit, while addressing the 8th Round Consultations meeting on Friday, July 7, 2023, held between the Chinese Delegates and the CARICOM leaders of the Caribbean nations, expressed his concern about the Haitian Situation and the issues the country has been facing related to the Humanitarian, Governmental and security crises.

He stated that Haiti is currently experiencing security and humanitarian crises, which requires the care and concern of all nations and added, “In order to usher a likely solution to the crisis, there will be a need for a Security Council resolution – we, therefore, request the fullest support of China at the Security Council.”

As per the Update, Earlier during the meeting of CARICOM Leaders held in Trinidad, the Leaders of the Caribbean nations also had various discussions over the Haitian issues in which they also noted the need for the immediate creation of the Humanitarian and Security Stabilization Corridor under the mandate of a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution and agreed to seek support from international partners to help finance its establishment and the strengthening of security in Haiti.

While addressing the 8th Consultation meeting, the Prime Minister and other leaders highlighted the issues of the Haitian people related to food security, climate change impacts, the reform of international financial systems, and security and air transportation within the region. He also emphasised the need to explore solutions to their common challenges.

Further, the Prime Minister also mentioned his vision to work in effective collaboration and partnerships with China to work against these issues.

“As Small Island Developing States, we look to form stronger partnerships with China and draw on your innovation and prowess in science and technology to tackle these global issues,” he shared.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Skerrit also highlighted Dominica’s long-term and fruitful relationship with China and expressed gratitude to the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of China, Hua Chunying, for their continued support for Caribbean states in areas of infrastructure investment, security assistance, trade and COVID-19 aid.

“I am confident that I speak on behalf of my fellow Caribbean brothers and sisters when I say that our ties with your country continue to bear fruit in the most tangible ways.

“Indeed, China continues to be extremely supportive of the region’s fight against climate change and our efforts to build resilience, specifically through post-disaster relief and recovery assistance, as well as funding for the construction and rebuilding of key infrastructure post disasters,” the Prime Minister said.
