Scottish Conservative Party Politician and Member of Parliament for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, John Lamont, attended a public meeting with 60 members of the Westruther Community on Friday, June 30, 2023. He also expressed concern over the Berwickshire Housing Association’s plans to evict residents on Edgar Road in the Village.

While expressing his concern for the Berwickshire Community, the Member of Parliament for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, John Lamont, raised the issue and expressed the concern of Westruther residents, who are tensed about plans by Berwickshire Housing Association (BHA) to evict residents from their homes on Edgar Road in the village.

As per the Update, BHA claims the houses are no longer safe. They have started legal action to evict residents, including an elderly couple who have lived in the community for most of their lives.

In contrast, MP John Lamont shared that the Edgar Road tenants do not want to be forced out of the village they love and want to stay in.

“Understandably, this is causing significant distress to the Westruther community.” he quoted.

While opposing the BHA’s plan, MP John said, “The village is united behind Edgar Road residents, and so am I. We will not allow this to go unchallenged.”

Further, MP John also raised his concern that BHA needs to understand these evictions’ broader impact on the village.

“BHA’s management must pause the evictions. They must find another solution that respects local wishes. They should not drag elderly people through a heavy-handed legal process.” he quoted in defence of the Westruther residents.

Furthermore, to address this action immediately, MP John ensured that he is regularly meeting with BHA’s management, and in light of the outpouring of support from the community on Friday, he has also asked for an urgent meeting with them, held on yesterday, July 3, 2023, (Monday).

“BHA must think again.” he asserted.

At last, MP John also urged people to support the Westruther Community, “Please show your support for the community by liking this post and sharing it on your social media channels.” he quoted.
